Ear Wax Removal

In the United Kingdom it is estimated that around 3.9% of the population require management of ear wax each year with many people having to wait more than 6 months to get treatment.  These statistics are astonishing and due to the lack of treatment availability with the NHS many people simply go on living their lives with this condition, unaware that they can get treated at their local Pharmacy.   Here at Easter Pharmacy & Clinics we want to help our customers with conditions such as this and that is why we have partnered up with Tympa Health to provide easy and accessible Ear Wax Removal.

We now have the ability to offer hearing screening, ear diagnostics and wax removal that may be a major benefit for the local community and other existing healthcare services.  By making these services more accessible we are able to remove the hassle of visiting the GP or waiting weeks for treatment.  It also relieves the strain on the NHS which is hugely encouraged at this time.

So, why is it important to take care of your hearing health?

Taking care of your hearing is vital!  We all want to live life to the fullest and that is why good ear and hearing health is important to people of all ages.  There are many factors that can affect our ear health including age, the misuse of ear buds, constant exposure to very loud noises and of course the build up of wax.  If our ear health is compromised then our ability to hear deteriorates, this often causes people to be socially withdrawn.

Signs and Symptoms to look out for…

Being aware of your ear health will allow you to better manage your hearing.  The following signs and symptoms could indicate that you have an ear or hearing problem:

  • Loss of hearing
  • Earache
  • Discomfort
  • Discharge
  • Ears feeling full
  • Ringing and itching
  • Loss of balance
  • Dizziness
  • Coughing

Diagnosis and Treatment with Tympa Health

Thanks to modern technology, Tympa Health treatments and procedures can help to quickly diagnose ear & hearing conditions.  Infections as well as excessive and compacted wax can be identified and treated quickly and painlessly at our Pharmacy.

Each appointment will take approximately 30 minutes. One of our specialist clinicians will carry out the test.  Once they have removed some wax the hearing screening will be performed.  During the examination, high definition images and videos will be taken.  This will identify any hearing issues and whether or not you may require further treatment from specialist doctors.  In most cases however, the initial problem is simply the presence of excessive wax itself.  If this is the case, a fast and painless procedure can be performed to clear the ear of any debris or built up wax.  This procedure could immediately improve hearing capabilities.

More on Microsuction

Ear Microsuction is the safest and most effective way to remove earwax.  It works by inserting a low pressure suction probe into the ear.  This probe will be controlled by the Pharmacist who will be using a microscopic lens attached to the Tympa Health device that will allow them to look clearly into the ear canal to remove the wax.  This procedure is painless and does not involve water being squirted into your ear canal like syringing does.  It is a simple and clean procedure.

What to Expect at your Wax Removal Appointment

Rest assured that our specially trained clinicians will use the safest method of wax removal to help you hear again.

  • Your wax removal appointment will take around 30 mins.
  • After asking a few questions to get a better understanding of the health of your ears, our clinician will examine your ear canals and ear drums by using an otoscope (magnifier with a light). They will record this information to help keep track of any changes in your ear over time.
  • We’ll then talk you through the procedure and show you the equipment that will be used and explain how it works. You’ll need to sign a consent form before we remove any wax from your ears.
  • Once you are happy to go ahead, our clinician will use a magnifier and suction tube to gently remove any wax that’s in your ear.
  • After our clinician has performed the procedure, they will then check the health of your ears and record this information.
  • If we are unsuccessful in removing any wax, we’ll advise you on your next steps.

Do I have to soften the ear wax prior to Microsuction?

In most cases we can remove the wax without any softening being required before the Microsuction treatment.  We do recommend that you place two drops of olive oil into your ear the night before your appointment.  In the instance that we cannot remove all of the wax, we recommend to return within a week for further treatment.
